FULL ITINERARY:
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh City – Cai Be Princess Depart from your hotel at 8am and drive to the township of Cai Be to board the Cai Be Princess, a traditional riverboat made from native bamboo, wood and rattan. During Vietnam’s French colonial period, boats like this were an essential means of transport in a swampy areas and poor roads. And even today, they are a handy means of reaching the delta’s isolated river communities.
Start with a visit to Cai Be’s famous floating market, where vendors come from around the Mekong Delta to sell their fruits, vegetables and other wares. The boat then stops at some local homes that double as artisanal factories. Talk with local residents as they make rice paste, coco sweets and popcorn. Continue along Mekong canals to Dong Hoa Hiep, a little-known island that sits between the towns of Vinh Long and Cai Be, where you can take a walk along the banks of the canal. The boat then motors to Le Longanier, a superb Indochinese villa located by the river, in a lush garden surrounded with fruit plantations. Dine on fresh local fish amid tropical gardens, and admire the tranquillity of an area so rich in history. At around 3:30pm, after a short walk along a narrow canal path, find a vehicle waiting to transfer you back to Ho Chi Minh City.
